Something I’ve been wanting to do…

All avid music fanatics have dreams of seeing their favourite artists perform in the flesh, and seeing shows played at world famous venues like The Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Others long to attend world famous festivals like Coachella and Benicassim. Since my love for the music festival was born watching the Big Day Out on TV as a young teen I’ve been sampling and appreciating the value of a ‘8 bands for the price of one’ ticket that our own Aussie festivals offer us here at home. Whilst festivals like Falls and Splendour feature hefty lineups of local and international artists, I had my first taste of the European super festival back in 2007 at ‘T in the Park’ in Scotland, and the ‘Carling Weekend Reading Festival’ just outside London. With a smorgasbord of festivals ranging throughout the entire European (and US) Summer featuring bills that obliterate even the most hyped up and over-priced Australian festivals (*cough* Splendour), it is only fitting that a true music lover longs to attend one of these events at least once in their lives. In 2007, I watched the whole of the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts main weekend on TV from my quiet staff room in the British Midlands. I was blown away by the images of 135,000 people rocking out, flags waving under the Pyramid Stage as Brandon Flowers and The Killers played their hits. It was something I promised myself I’d go to. Now, four years on, I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on a Glasto ticket and I’m ready to soak up the experience of attending what many believe is the greatest music festival on Earth. The festival will take a break next year while London hosts the 2012 Olympic Games and its popularity is evident as all tickets were sold out for the event in October of last year, five months before the full lineup was revealed and 7 months before the actual festival was to take place. As was to be expected, the lineup has proved very satisfying. Unfortunately, bands like Arcade Fire, The National, Pulp and hip hop artist Kanye West, who are featuring heavily at other festivals throughout the US and Europe this summer will NOT be present at Glastonbury. That said, I shouldn’t be let down by what is still on offer. The three headline acts U2, Coldplay and Beyonce will blow the roof off the Pyramid stage as well as several other classic artists like Morrissey, Paul Simon and Kool & The Gang. So, all that needs to be done now is for me to brush up on some Glasto tunes, prepare my flag and organise my timetable.
